About Us
The Risk Management Division's mission is to protect the County against the financial consequences of accidental losses which are catastrophic in nature, and to preserve County assets and public service capabilities from destruction or depletion; to minimize the total long term cost to the County of all activities related to the identification, prevention and control of accidental losses and the consequences; and to assist departments in the establishment of a safe work environment in which employees, as well as members of the general public, can enjoy safety and security in the course of their daily activities.

Risk Management Committee
Function/Purpose
The Risk Management Committee serves as the primary mechanism by which the County's financial and legal managers coordinate the County's handling and disposition of claims and claims lawsuits and the defense of County employees.
The committee's duties include:
- Coordinating the County's handling and disposition of claims and claims lawsuits
- Making decisions on the defense of county employees in legal matters
- Determining whether specific claims, lawsuits, or complaints should be defended by deputy prosecuting attorneys or outside counsel
- Reviewing and making recommendations on insurance coverage, self-insurance, deductibles, and loss prevention techniques
- Serving as the coordinating body between financial and legal managers
Established
This committee was established pursuant to the authority of Kitsap County Code Section 4.144.050, and its powers, duties, and responsibilities are established by county ordinance. The committee operates under the broader framework of the county's comprehensive risk management program designed to protect county assets and minimize financial exposure.
